Ontario Craft Beer 63: MacKinnon Brothers Crosscut Canadian Ale

Beer #63: MacKinnon Brothers Crosscut Canadian Ale (5.2%) from the Bath, Ont. (west of Kingston) farm-to-glass brewing operation has an interesting aroma that starts mineral-y and ends on barnyard notes and grasses. Flavours are rich and earthy. (I tasted this beer on Thursday, May 27 -- updating the blog a day later.)

The MacKinnon family has farmed on the land since 1784, and the two brothers who run the brewery, Ivan and Daniel, are sowing the seeds of change in Ontario beer-making by using barley, wheat and hops grown right there on the farm. This gives Ontario craft beer lovers the chance to taste terroir characteristics of the ingredients in the brews, an exciting development in the province's brewing scene. I'll definitely plan to visit the brewery next time I'm in the area.
